Code & Create: A Fortnite Creative "Hour of Code" Pathway
Master foundational coding concepts through a series of fun, one-hour projects in Fortnite Creative, from building obstacle courses and treasure hunts to composing music. This pathway bundles five complete lessons into one comprehensive workshop.
This professional development pathway provides a comprehensive introduction to coding and game design using the device-based logic system in Fortnite Creative. We have bundled five engaging, hands-on "Hour of Code" modules into a single learning journey. Participants will progress through a series of distinct lessons, each designed to teach a core computer science concept by building a fun, playable game.
This pathway includes:
Conditional Statements: Create an "escape room" style lock-and-key puzzle using if...then...else logic with the Conditional Button.
Functions: Build a "Trivia Tower Escape" that uses the Sequencer device to demonstrate how functions bundle reusable sets of instructions.
Loops & Sequencing: Learn to create and loop music using the Music Sequencer, teaching the fundamentals of timing and algorithms.
Events & Collision: Design a dynamic Obstacle Course that explores event-driven programming, collision detection, and triggers.
Variables: Build a "Treasure Hunt Race" that uses variables to create a scoring system and track player progress.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand and apply core computer science concepts: conditional statements (if...then...else), functions, loops, sequences, variables, and events.
Utilize Fortnite Creative's devices (e.g., Conditional Button, Sequencer, Trigger, Score Manager) to build game logic.
Design and build multiple small-scale game experiences (obstacle course, treasure hunt, music level, trivia game).
Develop clear strategies for teaching computational thinking and CS principles using Fortnite Creative.
Gain the confidence to facilitate project-based coding lessons for students in your own classroom.
AUDIENCE
K-12 Educators, Computer Science Teachers, STEM/STEAM Facilitators, Tech Integration Specialists, Librarians, and anyone interested in teaching foundational coding concepts through game creation.
